Valve Stem Seal Replacement

Does your BMW suffer from slight smoking or increased oil consumption?

Valve stem seals are small gaskets present to lubricate & seal the valve stem as it moves into the valve guide within the engine. Over time the valve stem seals will deteriorate and become rigid and will not provide a sufficient seal, allowing too much oil to pass though and enter the combustion chamber and exhaust. You may notice smoking from the exhaust and/or increased oil consumption. The catalytic convertor and/or diesel particulate filter will suffer from the presence of excess oil in the system, causing emission problems and subsequently decreasing their lifespan.

Carbon build up over time....

The leaking of excess oil may also lead to a large carbon build up, potentially causing valve damage alongside reduced volumetric efficiency (restricted air flow) potentially affecting power & fuel consumption. These symptoms can often be solved with a replacement of these perished valve stem seals. Some BMW models may have the seals replaced with the engine ‘in situ’ using specialist tools. Other engines such as the N42 and N46 engines will require further engine stripping. To find out more about this service give us a call and ask for a quote.
