Performance Engine Tuning

Want more from your car?

Chip tuning (also known as re-mapping) is the perfect way to optimize your engine to get maximum enjoyment from your BMW or MINI. By tuning your engine, you unlock its full potential, enhancing your driving experience, and putting a bigger smile on your face each time you turn the key. Chip tuning is the process of modifying the factory engine ECU software to change the characteristics of it. This will give your engine increased horsepower and torque across the entire rev range with much better throttle response. Your engine will feel sharper and will respond to your demands more urgently with more traction at low revs and improved drivability.

You can even see improvements in fuel consumption, with many diesel owners reporting 5-6mpg improvements immediately after the upgrade. Many customers have this upgrade done to every car they own just for the fuel consumption benefits alone. The savings in fuel costs usually pay for the upgrade and the extra power is a bonus.

Unlock the potential....

Have you ever wondered what more your BMW or MINI could do? Believe it or not, your car is actually holding back power intentionally. Manufacturers have many factors to consider when designing an engine, often deliberately down tuning it to make allowances for poor quality fuel, poor servicing, not to mention being sympathetic to all kinds of driving style. In essence, the factory engine map is a compromise for all drivers and all conditions. If your car is in good health and you maintain it well, then there is no reason to not take advantage of the extra potential it has.

Some models are even literally detuned versions of higher models. A good example of this was the R50 MINI One. It was essentially a MINI Cooper engine with altered software to limit the throttle opening, restricting the engine by 25bhp. By remapping your MINI One you take it above and beyond the MINI Cooper performance. What’s not to like about that.

What’s Involved?

We begin by checking that your engine is in good health before changing anything, looking at fault codes and carrying out a road test to ensure that your car is performing as it should be.

For earlier cars built up to around 2009, the modification is achieved by reading out the engine map from your ECU via the OBD diagnosis port on the car. The ECU itself does not need to be touched as it’s the software that we are interested in. We then create a copy of this file and then replace it with an improved version. For later cars built from around 2009 onwards, due to changes in the hardware design of the ECU, we will often need to remove the ECU from the car and extract the file directly from the unit. When the new file is uploaded, the car is tested and once we are happy, handed back for you to enjoy.
